Hi,

I have an omc 800 stringer mechanical shift outdrive. The trim was working now it's not. I can here the solenoid up/down working but no power to the trim motor. Any help is appreciated. The boat hasn't been ran in a few years and judging by the motor oil I doubt the previous owner change it.

Update: removed the 4 bolts from the clutch housing and water came pouring out. We washed the boat yesterday and I'm wondering if to much water in the bilge would fry the motor?

Sounds like the tilt motor, not the trim (trim is on the front of the Stringer engines). Yes - if you got that motor wet, you could potentially mess it up. If you're certain the battery has enough juice, then I would take a look at that motor.

Yes you are correct the tilt. The battery is brand new and is fully charged. Here's the problem what part number do I need. I'm having a hard time cross referencing the 175 with the 302 engine for that year.

What's the easiest way to pull the motor?

What year is your OMC? On the engine (not the drive) there should be a tag (typically around one of the rear motor mounts) with a number on it. That should be the identifier. 175 sounds older than '77 ... but I'm not sure.

I wouldn't buy a new motor unless you 1) find a good deal on one, or 2) have to. If you can get in there and remove it, clean it or have it rebuilt, that should do you well. The motor is inside the hull, on the intermediate housing. Port side of the engine, all the way to the back, and all the way to the bottom. Typically you have to be a contortionist to get to 'em. For me, if I pulled my seats I could reasonably reach it.

There are two bolts that go through the motor into the intermediate housing. Pull those bolts and it'll come off (unplug it, of course). Be careful - those bolts usually hold the motor assembly together too, so it may want to come apart on you. Also - your hammer coupling is right behind it, and it'll want to jump out and dive down your bilge. You need that coupling so pay attention to it.

That Sounds like a fun time, I will get back with the year etc, when I get home. I did find that the 175 was made from 1975-1978. I also found this motor on amazon, it matches the part number I found on iboats part page.

Now that I'm thinking about it. I lowered the drive on Saturday and I heard, felt a loud bang like the outboard hitting the ground so I immediately lifted it halfway and left it in that position. could I have screwed something by not allowing it to drop fully (maybe) and then lifting it back up?

I also noticed a small piece of chewed up plastic when I removed the clutch cover about the size of a finger nail and looked somewhat spiral.

It is possible that jamming the drive jacked your clutch pack up. Being honest, I never really opened my clutch pack up beyond checking/changing lube - so, I'm not sure how tough that one is to deal with.

The motor you posted is not the correct motor. That looks like a trim pump motor. Through '77 the OMC stern drives were electric shift. From 78' to '80 (I think) they were hydro-mechanical shift, and from '80 (I think) through '86 they were mechanical. The difference between a '77 & '78 drive can be pretty significant. Once you know the year (or the shift type) we can probably figure the motor out pretty quickly.

Numbers off the stern drive won't be too helpful. Most likely you'll wind up just getting the part number for the gear case.

Photos of the stern drive may help clear a few things up.

I've been out on business, but before I left I tried to look for the tag on the engine but I could not find any. After I got back I tried the tilt again and it did go down and partially back up in small increments I'm thinking I need to thoroughly clean all the connections and apply dielectric grease to everything I can.
