Since I am the newest member to this forum I thought I would ask a question. My trim has worked great until yesterday. 1981 Well craft, 180 Bow rider, merc 470. the trim motor was replaced last year because it didn't work at all. I noticed in the water when I went to reverse, the stern would climb out of the water, another first. I put it on the trailer that afternoon and it would not lift at all. It made the normal noise like it was lifting and my gauge showed in the up position, but the stern never moved. I then manually placed it in the up position and hooked it for the ride home. Any ideas? I assume it has a resevoir for fluid, but I couldn't find it. I know helicopters, not boats. Please help<br />Russell

Re: trim on 470

I am not an expert, but it could be something as simple as low oil (470 trim unit takes 10w30 motor oil), or it could be a valve body issue. With outdrive all the way down, pull fill plug and check level. The fill/check plug is on the top of the base of the pump unit, it is pretty easy to find. You may have to add oil and work the trim up and down to cycle out any air. Another possibility is bad ram seals. Good luck...

Thanks Jason J, I will give it a whirl and see what happens. I need to do to my boat, what you did to yours. I think my floor is rotting. The seats keep falling over when we go around corners.
