Can someone tell me how Merc/Mariner trim/tilt gauges get their signals. Is it from the trim motor or is there a sensor (potentiometer) that's attached to the engine mount bracket? I've been trying to find something in the parts lists for any year (Mines the 91 Mariner 100hp serial # 09655784), but haven't seen what I think I'm looking for. If the motor is a stepper motor on the new models then I'm guessing that's were the signal comes from.

I have a positon sensor for my Hydraulic Jack Plate and it works with a simple pot and rack/pinion gear setup. I'm thinking that if I can't figure it out I'd just order one of those and rig it up.

This is just one of those nice to have things and not a critical must have or I won't go fishing items like beer.

Tilt the motor all the way up, then look on the port side where the pin thru the tilt cylinder is located.

Re: Trim position sensor or ??

The motor is on a stand so I hooked the battery up and tilted the engine. There she was, the mounting point for the sender but no sender.

I finally found the sender at saveonboating.com, (57.91 after shipping, no tax). I didn't find the gauge there so I got if from Overton's. I also found the 30lb Water Pressure kit I've been looking for at Overtons. West Marine had a merc tilt/trim gauge on closeout sale but who know's if it was the right one or not and I hate doing returns. Looks like I'm all set!

As a side note, the different versions of the sender require the correct gauge. If you know a little electronic's you can make the newer gauges work but I wanted to make mine as simple as possible and I wanted a Teleflex gauge to match the rest of my gauges.
