I just got a 83 rinker 19 foot open bow with a 470 mercruiser power trim i/o and i am having a problem with my trims. I am new to boating and i need some help. If i use the trailer button the outdrive will go down but not up until i crack one of the lines to i guess bleed the air out. What is causing this? It only does this if i use the trailer button. it does not even make a noise when i use the up button but the motor will make noise and it will go down. Please help. Thank you.

Are you using both the center and upper button to trim it up? Trim panels that have three buttons, one says IN the others say out and something else I can't remember, but it is the center button. Press both the upper and center buttons together to make the driver come up out of the water, press the IN or bottom button to make it go down or in the water.....

I just found that the trim will not stay up when i use the up button. It will stay up when i use trailer.
That's impossible. It's the same pump, same cylinders, and same system. The trim and trailer buttons control the same UP solenoid.

Here's a link to the manual for the 83 to 90 Alpha drives and trim systems. Have a look at the troubleshooting section.

Re: Trim problems please help!!

Its a gen 1 but thats what it will do. I can use the up and down fine but once i use trailer it will not go back down until i open the line on the drivers side the closest one to the boat. Once i open this line it will go down. I would think i would have to loosen the line on both cylinders for it to go down. Maybe my other cylinder is leaking internally? I have looked at the manual but it doesnt say anything about why it will not go down after i use trailer it does say if it will not stay up there could be an internal leak so im guessing that one or both of the cylinders are internally leaking.

Also, do you happen to know what the original prop would be? or recommend one? it has a 14x19 on it now its all chewed up but i have no idea if thats whats suppose to be on it or what. i havent used it while it was not chewed up so im not sure how it is.

Re: Prop size

470,
To size your prop, you can start with this site:
http://dansdiscountprops.com/index.cfm , go to prop wizard, enter your info, and get your answer. Remember this will give you a starting point, you may have to go an inch or two either way in pitch, depending on how you use your boat. I found this helpful for choosing mine.

Re: Prop size

If you jumper the motor solinod will it go down? You may be looking at a wiring issue. You have two swiches right? a trim up/dn and a tilt up/dn.

Re: Trim problems please help!!

I really dont think its a wiring issue. The solenoid will come on but it will not go down unless i loosen that line to let a very little pressure off. plus it will work fine until im all the way up on the trailer feature. Im thinking a hydraulic problem. But i dont know where to start. I have 1 switch that i push up and it makes my trim go up then i push down on the same switch and it will go down then just under this switch is a button to press for the trailer feature. Thank you for the prop calculator.

Can you hear the motor run when you push the trim down button with the drive all the way up. Is it the soliond you hear clicking or the motor stalling?

Re: Trim problems please help!!

i took a quick look at the hydraulic diagram and it looks like if the shuttle valve sticks it could cause the problem you have. hows your oil look? Dirty, milky? Id try inspecting / cleaning the internal valves in your pump.

Actually i just changed the oil but there was something red in it i think it was a mix of oil and transmission fluid. But i changed the oil and bled it. i will look into taking the pump out and cleaning it. I do hear the motor running when i push the switch either way but when it hits full up you can hear the motor like struggling against the pressure. Other than that it runs pretty free.

If the motor is indeed engaging but stalling I would say the previous poster is on the right track with the valves in the pump itself.
