I have a 2005 merc 90 two stroke. The trim and tilt stops working periodically. It will do its whether its running or not, also it dose not matter if its in the water. It dose not kill the engine. It only happens every so often and if I wait a few minutes it works again. When it happens both switches, the one on the motor and on the control don't work. I replaced the control not to long ago ( for other reasons) but it did not fix it. I can use all the help I can get. Im a boater on a budget, don't really want to have to take it in.

thanks

Re: trim problems?

I have the same problem and although I have a V6 and much older engine, my conclusion after disconnecting, inspecting, and reattaching the wires in all locations............I suspect it's the brush plate in the top of the pump motor (if your's is laid out like mine) When mine stops, I walk around to the electric pump motor and tap it with a wrench and works again! Mine has not failed to work while on the water but that may because I only trim; not running the engine from all down to all up like I have to do to trailer it.

probably a relay or an electrical connection. the trim motor used on 2005 is not known for intermittent brush failure and is also far too young to be having motor problems (if properly installed). So look for a bad relay, a loose connection, or a corroded connector.

but ... if it was your motor ... you would know something was wrong because corrosion would be evident on the motor frame long before the insides started having problems.

Re: trim problems?

Thanks guys, over the next few days I'm going to have a look at the wiring. The pump motor has a little rust on it. I also am going to try and treat that. I'll keep ya posted.

sorry it took me so long to get back. It turned out to be fluid leaking in to the motor housing via the motor shaft. I cant find anything wrong with either the housing or the motor shaft. Any ideas?

Re: trim problems?

That's a tough one. your system seems too young to have that type of problem. assemble the motor and put upside down in a banch vice. pour a thin liquid into reservoir and let it sit for a day. See if the seal is watertitght. If it is then the oil is being blown up into motor by pressure. Pressure comes from overfilling. If you did not add any oil then it can be caused by water intrusion. Water gets in from top of ram but it is extremely rare for that much water to get in. Most likely it is a defective motor seal.

Yes I thought the same thing, its not that old, but there was a lot of corrosion around the out side where salt water had eaten the metal, unfortunately I am the the first owner of the boat. I went a head and bought a new pump and am going to install it tonight. What type of fluid to put in it? Thanks

Re: trim problems?

Use whatever is reccomended in your manual. If the ram is flushed and it is a new pump (all the stuff that goes up under motor reservoir including a new square black base) then you can also use hydraulic oil. Hydraulic oil is better but costs more and is sometimes hard to get in less than 5 gallon sizes.

Make sure to install the anode strap p/n 88238A18
In saltwater it can double the life of your motor.

Thanks, I did install the strap. How do I check and make sure that I have the right fluid level as I do not want to over fill.

Re: trim problems?

run system up and down several times. At the very top of each stroke remove the filler cap and check level. top off and fingertighten the filler back down. cycle down-up and recheck. after a few times the fluid will still be up to plug. Don't try to overfill, you'll damage seals and blow oil up into motor. Don't try to top off with engine not lifted, it will spray oil. Ignore the bubbles in reservoir, it is a natural occurence.
