Trim pump exchange

Well let me say that Iboats forums have helped me out tremendously. Usually all my questions have been answered using the search function. But I haven't found this question answered yet

I am currently restoring a couple of boats in the mid 70's era and both have pre-alpha Mercruiser drives on them with 120 HP motors (Outdrive SN's start with 399). Both boats have no trim indicating gauges or even any electronics on the hydraulic trim indicating cylinder. All I see it do is just run in and out and not connected to anything except the pump.

Is there a newer style pump, with a built in reverse lock, that I can change out with to eliminate the trim cylinder and a few hoses and upgrade to newer, less maintanence technology??

Many thanks in advance

Re: Trim pump exchange

I just did this on my dad's old Sea Ray. I bought a new style trim pump and tried it... but it didn't work with the small diameter rams. Now it's possible that that trim rams were messed up too... I bought some used newer / bigger rams on with the new pump and it works great. You can try the new pump with your existing rams and see. Either way, it is much easier and cheaper to buy a new pump than try fixing and messing with what you currently have. Just my humble 2cents. ;)
