My trim pump motor is starting to work intermittently. Works great when it runs but it will just stop working altogether. When it stops working a tap with a screwdriver on the pump makes it start working again. what is happening here?

The brushes are stuck or worn out

If they are stuck can they be easily repaired?

No, the motor parts are NLA, so you need to remove the motor which is under the swival bracket and either replace it or send it to a electric repair shop.
