Trim Pump round two

So I got the new Trim Motor in. It was a two wire instead of a three but I rewired it with a Dual polarity switch.

I lifted the engine into the upright position and filled up the reservoir with 30 weight ND oil and touched the two wires to the two poles on the battery. Trim motor spins up but the engine is not moving up or down. I ran the motor for about 20 seconds one direction then tried it for another 20 in the other direction. Nothing. Jacked the back of the boat up so as to level the reservoir and filled it up again. Lowered the engine by hand and raised it again hoping to prime the pump a bit. Ran the motor in both directions for another 20 seconds each and nothing.

What am I doing wrong here. I tried to find some threads on priming the pump but couldn't find anything. As always any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Dan

i think there might be a haxagonal shaft that connects motor to pump.

Ok so I took off the trim motor and removed what I think is the valve body. There are three bolts on the top and it looks like machined aluminium. I cleaned the two pins (for lack of proper name) and the springs look OK. I also removed some plastic and other junk that had gotten in there. Put everything back together and now the motor will go down but not back up.

I wanted to add that I have disconnected the hydraulic arm from the engine assembly and it retracts by using the motor but does not extend.

Anybody have any clues now. do I just need a new valve body or do I need to replace all the hydraulic bits?

you may not have enough fluid. On most systems the reservoir only holds about 1/4th of the total fluid. You have to fill, raise, fill, raise, fill, raise .. etc, ect. Eventually the system is both topped of and fully extended. Then you put filler plug back in and lower.

Which fluid do I use? I've tried both 30 wt ND and Tilt trim fluid. Neither seem to work. When I got the boat there was no fluid in the system so I can't tell if they used ATF or tilt trim or 30wt.

Also I did what you said and fill, raise etc until the unit was not taking any more fluid but it still will not extend.

can't say. it depends upon what year and horsepower engine you have.
