I have a Mercruiser 165. It is trailered up right now. But when I try to move it down it will not go anywhere. I think there might be a hydro leak but how would I text that? I know nothing about boats and just got this boat on Monday.

It worked when I bought it but not now. Again the motor works just nothing moves..

find/purchase/borrow a manual. There will be a troubleshooting guide in there for this exact scenario I'm sure.

My manual is always where I go first personally. If I can't find it in there, then someone here is bound to have an idea.

first off make sure there is fluid in the pump. and as you are pushing the switch to move it down have someone apply preassure on the out drive or even stand on it,

Thanks...

I was planing on checking the fluid level when I get home. Is there a special hydrolic fluid i should use. OR can I just get something at Autozone?

10w 30w motor oil.

YOUR USING AN AUTOZONE STARTER ON A BOAT????????

automotive starters arnt built to marine specs
they can cause sparks while starting, marine starters are built not to cause sparks

if there are any fumes in the engine compartment the sparks can ignite them causing a nice explosion

Is this starter for you boat? If so, see the post right above this one. If not, gotstephen was being over protective and jumped to a conclusion as auto starters, alternators and fuel pumps are big no no's in boats and is a sore subject around here, for good reason.

i wonder if it's the trim switches on the leg. how old is the vessel? that's exactly what mine was doing. the metallic dust when i pulled the covers off used to be the inner workings

Be sure you don't have the shift lever in reverse. There is a reverse lock valve witch blocks the hydraulics when in reverse.Using the trim while in reverse can damage the system. You say the motor is running when you work the switch down?
