I was washing my 1994 Ranger 374v this morning and had my motor support bar off of the motor and had the 175hp XRI slightly trimmed up while I was washing it. Got through washing and went in for a cup of coffee and watched tv for 30 minutes. Went back out and the motor was sitting level instead of slightly trimmed up. I dont think this is normal.
So this evening I took her to the lake and rode around and then when I went to load it on the trailer I trimmed the motor up a good bit so it wouldn't hit the bottom.(shallow water) and I had to gas it a little to push the boat on the trailer. Well when I did this the motor pushed itself back down.
Never noticed this before. What could be going on with my trim system? Could it just be low on fluid or are the seals in the hydraulic unit going bad? I hope this is nothing major because it looks like it could be a pain in the you know what to take all of that off and replace it.

Re: Trim Pump

I think it sounds like the seals in the hydraulic unit have gone bad.

Re: Trim Pump

Fluid level is easily checked: Engine tilted all the way up, nylon screw on the rear of the unit about the size of a nickel, proper fill is even with the bottom of the threads. If you are using fluid, you usually can see fluid leaks around the seal leaking. If the internal seals are the only thing bad, you won't use fluid and won't see any external leaks.

Preferred fluid is Quicksilver Power Trim and Steering Fluid, or ATF if that's not available...per my service manual.

Re: Trim Pump

So if the seals are in fact bad then what is involved to replace them? Can I replace the seals or is it easier to just replace the whole hydraulic unit? Does my motor have to be pulled in order to change the thing?
