My up trim button went out. I have been using tilt to trim it out. It just trims up a lot faster. Is this OK?

Re: Trim question

Not really. Most tilt cylinders are not designed to handle the pessure of the motor pushing the boat. Pretty good chance if you continue running it this way you will blow a seal in your tilt cylinder. Or worse, break something.

Hmm i always thought tilt and trim were essentially the same thing. This is the first boat i've had with both on it.

Does tilt have to be all the way down for trim to work? Maybe this is my problem. For instance...if tilt up a tad, i can lower it back down with trim button. And only sometimes my trim up/out button will work. FWIW its in the throttle.

Also, Im only touching tilt a tad after going underway, maybe 1 second.

Re: Trim question

Just found out about the trim limit switch. That explains why my out only works sometimes, but my in works. They were in the same switch, very confusing ha ha.

Re: Trim question

You have to be talking about your "Trailer" switch to trim out, correct?

I have two, two position switches on either side of the throttle. One says tilt up/down..... the other says trim in/out.

After playing with these for the first time (only ever had tilt on my boats) the trim out button only worked sometimes, but now im thinking it was when it got to high (hitting trim limit). Before, I thought my trim out button was broken, so while underway i very briefly tapped the tilt up button to raise the bow (instead of trim out). no longer than a second was it held.

Re: Trim question

There should be no difference in speed or potential damage with either switch (trim or trailer or tilt) with an I/O. The ONLY concern and ONLY difference is tilt bypasses the "trim" limit which is designed to save the u-joints at full power levels. As long as you don't exceed the angle of the original trim limit, then you are OK.

The exception is OMC Stringer drives as the tilt and trim are totally different systems.

Thats what I thought, I always heard the only difference is that you can make more minute changes when using trim. Eh, either way I think both will work now.

Re: Trim question

Pretty much what the trailer switch does on Mercs. Flip that switch up, and it's tilt all the way...
