hi, I am working on removing the trim unit from my 1990 175 mariner and I cant seem to figure out how to detatch the top portion of the ram (cylinder) from the motor. It appears to have some type of pin that runs trough it to hold it on and on one end of the pin is slotted like a screwdriver or something is needed to remove it. This trim I think is called a 3 ram model, it has 2 smaller rams and 1 large one that actually does the lifting. Thanks. chesapeake

Welcome Chesapeake! I'm going to move your post over to Merc/Mariner prepair forum. You will get the help you need there.

Re: trim removal

Sorry for the second post of simular nature but this threaded discussion expressed the same problem I was having but no answer was every recorded. I've done an exhausted search for an answer and nothing seems to provide me with some direction.

My main abjective is to remove the Trim motor to clean and repair the brushes. I am assuming I need to remove the hold PTT from the OB. If not, please let me know how to remove while in place.

If I must remove the PTT, how the heck does that pin pop out the top cylindar??? I really don't want to hoist this OB off the transom but if it has to happen I'll do it.

Re: trim removal

To remove the trim motor you do not need to disassemble then entire swivel bracket. You can use a lift to take the engine weight load off the transom. Remove your steering and the right side nut on the tilt tube. Loosen but do not remove the left side. Remove the right side transom bracket bolts that hold the bracket to the boat. Remove the 4 bolts that hold the side bracket to the trim system. Remove the wiring clamp and disconnect the wiring at the engine and pull the wire out and clear. Finally remove the right side bracket and then you can remove the trim motor.

When referencing right from left, the right side is the side the pump is on.

Re: trim removal

Thanks for the information. I checked with a Marine repair place in town and they also advised me that I can remove the pin holding the cylinder at the top by tapping it out with a hammer and pin. My trim have 3 bolts on each side holding it together and there is only one Ram rod. The motor is plastic style with three wires going into the top. It also has phylip screws (4) holding the motor top together and I suspect two torch hex screws at the base.

The mech said it should all come out if I just remove the six bolts and the pin/rod holding the top of the cyclinder.

Will that work?

Not sure on a 3 wire with the older style swivel brackets. If you can hold off until this evening, I'll take a look at mine and tell you for sure. I have both types. On the new style they lost 5lbs of engine weight at the swivel bracket by recessing it on the inside. You can't get the motor off unless you take the side bracket loose.

Re: trim removal

Andre, checked them both out last night. Both are recessed so the side plate has to come off. I checked the manual and the procedure I described to you is the same as is in the shop manual.

Just a side note: You may find you can get it out of there without removing the side plate but my guess is that it will be more difficult.
