Re: Trim repair leak

hello
you have to dissconnect and remove the cross pin then using the spanner tool remove the cap from the tilt cyl. not hard but dont bugger up the holes in the cap. use the correct tool i think the torque on that cap is about 80 ft pounds

Re: Trim repair leak

Thanks RB for the info. Local Yami dealer didn't have/couldn't find the part number for the spanner wrench and made it sound like it would be next to impossible to order. Have checked all over to find any kind of spanner wrench and the only one i've seen is an adjustable version for deckplates 1/4" and 5/16" pins. Holes on the cap look to be maybe 3/16? Any ideas? Someone suggested making one or using a punch to break it loose - neither sound great options for a clean job.

Also, does the piston/ram come out as one unit and are there any issues wiht the hydrolic fluid?

Thanks again!

Re: Trim repair leak

hello
the tool is not hard to order.
DO NOT try the punch trick. mostlikly you will deform the holes enough tp preclude removal.
I dont have the manual here but the part number for the tool includes both tools. one for the tilt cyl cap and one for the trim caps.
the tool book has it as well as the service manual.
once the cap is off clamp the ram end in a vise and remove the nut from the piston end. be aware that there are a lot of loose components such as springs and balls. dont lose any and try to keep them in the same place. remove the piston then the cap. then you can remove the oring and wiper seal. use new orings and back up washers on the pistion . its very simple but easy to mess up :) :)

Re: Trim repair leak

Thanks again - the Clymer manual i have does not cover the power trim and tilt assy in detail- just how to remove the entire unit and specifics on trim motor repair. Appreciate the procedure. Tool/part# is not referenced and will try another Yami dealer to see if i can get the tool ordered. Exploded diagram from Yamaha parts site shows: Dust seal, o-ring, o-ring, o-ring, o-ring, backup ring, piston, o-ring. Would you replace all of these and does that come as a kit?

Re: Trim repair leak

Finally got tools to do the job on both trim and tilt ...
A) Would you rebuild/replace o-rings/seal on all three rams or just address them as they leak (6 year-old motor?

B) On the Tilt ram, do you raise it all the way up and disconnect ram from motor and then lower all the way down before removing the cap?

C) Does the fill cap on reservoir need to be off and do i do any thing with the manual release valve?

Thanks!
