I have mercruiser alpha one outdrive and I am trying to get the trim gauge to work . Complete resto and never has worked since I have owned the boat . I have one wire hooked to ground strip on transom . The other is hooked to light puple/white tracer in main harness to engine . I have jumped past the harness and ran a single wire to the back of the gauge at the s position and still the same results . The gauge either shows full up or full down with nothing in between . I can take the sensor off the gimbal ring and manually move it by hand and it still is operating that way . Very small range of when it goes from full down to full up when you turn the gear on the sender . Boat is a 1982 mercruiser 260 (350 v8) alpha outdrive .

Almost sounds like you are working with the limit switch, not the trim gauge sender.

I believe that the limit switch is on the port side and the gauge sender is starboard.

I will double check but I think I am on the correct side . Already set the trim limit on the port side . It works perfect !

Re: TRIM SENSOR(sender) GAUGE ISSUES

In that case you may have a sender that is no longer working properly in terms of its resistance and its internal contact surfaces. You may be able to open the sender up for a look, but you may have to buy a replacement sender.
