Yes they do have a limit. It's just not automatic. (IMO, they usually don?t work on the Mercruisers anyway IMO). My trim gauge has a black bar (top) and blue bar (bottom), which overlap slightly at the halfway mark. You do not want to go into the black (about half way up in the range) when operating according to my operators manual. Even then I try to limit going this far and when I do it is at no-wake and I try not to turn the drive side to side to much. These things have u-joints which can only be bent so far while moving before things get stressed.
