trim switch problems

Ive got a force 120 horse, 1995. My controller is a quicksilver 3000. The button on my controller doesn't work in gear only out of gear. the button on the motor works all the time. Do you think the controller is bad ore something else. has anyone had this problem, and how did you trouble shoot it

I'd be looking at the wires in the lever to the switch. There's either a loose connection or more likely a wire broken inside the insulation. If it won't go up or down, look at the red wire (or maybe it's purple). If it will go up but not down, look at the green wire. If it will go down but not up, look at the blue wire.
