I just bought a hobo house boat with a 1980's- 60 hp merc.power trim motor. The control box doesn't have a tilt/trim button. I had to go into the outboard motor and cross circuit the wires to get the tilt motor to lift, so that I could trailer it. The remote control box is single lever and has a "multi-pin" cable with a separate "ground" wire that comes off the multi pin cable. It may be the original box from 1970.Is this extra cable for trim or what? Any hints? toldland

Re: trim switch

Mercury controls from the seventies did not have trim controls built into them. There was a seperate three-button trim/tilt control usually mounted on the dashboard. Thw Mercury control boxes from that era did have three slot round connectors for the tachmeter and other dashboard instruments. It was on the front of the control box. You could create a trim control panel out of two heavy duty (15Amp) switches, and mount it on your dash, or purchase either an aftermarket or OEM switch.

Re: trim switch

Thanks,That helps a lot. Althuogh I still have to wonder what the EXTRA 6 inch cable coming out of the back of the box, under the key is for.It is the same size as a "cable TV cable". It has 5 or 6 pins in it and a separate wire with a slide on connector covered in clear insulating plastic. I'll take a closer look next weekend and see if I can get more clues. Thanks again

Re: trim switch

Toldland the cable you are describing sure sounds like the accessory harness cable. It is intended to connect to the instruments on the on the dash like tach, trim gauge, and warning buzzer if you have one. Typically 5 pins (ground/black, switched +12V/purple, tach signal/grey, alarm signal/tan and trim indicator signal/brown&wht). Not sure what the extra wire might be for. What color is it? Does it look 'factory' or an add-on?

You can add a separate T/T control as Chris pointed out or replace the control with a new used one that has the T/T function. They are sold on e-bay all the time for between $30-$70. What part of Canada are you from?
