Trim Switch.

I have replaced my control mounted trim switch twice now and it is gone out again. It is always the down side of the rocker switch that quits working.
I noticed going down the trim pump is whining a little.
I have bled the system several times but it is still noisy.
Also going down is slower than going up.
Could the pump be pulling to many amps and burning that side of the switch up?
How do i test this? Thanks..

Re: Trim Switch.

Down would do most of the work in the water. Don't run your pumps past end of travel. Put an Amp meter in the circuit to measure the current pull from the motor both up/down. (Most volt/ohm meters will have an amp reading set up.) Apparently your trim switch circuit is not protected or over protected. lThis leaves the switch as the weakest point in the circuit.
If you want to keep the switch healthy put an inline fuse or circuit breakers in the circuit. Use a fuse at 10% greater then your normal/avg. current draw.
Hope this helps...

Re: Trim Switch.

The switch only operates the solenoids, and doesn't supply the motor with power directly. So the only power going thru the switch is a few miliamps. Nothing like the 30+ amps the motor draws.
Is the switch breaking or just stops working?

Re: Trim Switch.

Its the small switch that goes in the control handle. The down position just stops working.
It gets to the point where i have to push in real hard on it then it will go down.
I was lucky to find the OEM switch the last couple times.
50 bucks and its just a plastic rocker switch..
I'm tempted just to bypass that switch and put a 3 way toggle on the dash but i like having the thumb control..

Thanks for the replies...

Like Don said, the only current going through that switch controls a solenoid unless someone has bypassed the solenoid.

Remove the wires from the switch and operate it with a jumper to determine if its the switch.

That kind of problem is not caused by excess power, that sounds more like a cheaply built (but expensive to buy) switch falling apart inside.

Re: Trim Switch.

Thanks Don,Kind of what i was thinking.
I just found one on ebay still in original omc package.
I guess i'll try one more.
I looked up the ones i bought from partsfinder.com and it does look different than the one on ebay. They may have been aftermarket parts. After i thought about it the first 2 were just in a plastic bag with the part number written on the bag with a sharpie..

OMC did NOT use a plastic bag marked with a Sharpie........

Oh well Bruce! I'm getting used to buying parts..I figure sooner or later the old boat will be like new.
Next purchase is a new set of exhaust manifolds..thats a big hit there...
I just had the drive apart and all the gears looked great,no metal on the drain magnet. The engine runs great,so i guess i'll keep her a few more years..

Re: Trim Switch.

Gary,

Turns out I did not throw away the switch yet. If you can send me a picture of your control and it turns out to be the same control, I will mail you the switch. Looks like it is pressed into the handle from the rear and relies on some tabs for a friction fit. Youu will have to do some wire splicing because I only left around 5 inches of wire from the switch.
