Can somebody tell me approx how much oil a Mariner single ram trim system would hold. I am imstalling a new trim motor and changing the fluid and can not seem to find a spec anywhere. It looks like maybe a half a liter came out. And it appeared to be trans fluid. But not sure it was full or not. Another quick question is the trim oil just hydralic oil or is it a specific oil. I am going install the trim oil but was just wondering. Thanks in advance.

Re: Trim system oil.

Most trim/tilt systems use automatic transmission fluid, I'm not sure how much fluid it will take but you'll know when its full because it 'll start coming back out the filler hole, be careful not to overfill it or you can blow the motor.

Re: Trim system oil.

Just look at the housing, understanding it contains parts which would displace oil and you have a wild idea. Probably about a pint as all you have to do is move the piston up several inches.

Oil is Merc trim oil or ATF and my manual doesn't get particular about GM or Ford or Chrysler ATF.

Proper fill is to the bottom of the (obvious) plug on the rear of the housing.

Requires bleeding if it was completely drained.

Bleed merely consists of filling with fluid (to bottom of hole) move (attempt to move) the engine up and down....top off the fluid an do it again till you can gain control of tilting the engine. Top it off the last time and install the plug.....you're good to go.'

Re: Trim system oil.

Thanks guys the reason i was asking about how much it held was the trim oil comes in tubes that are 10oz and just wondering how many i should get because its a 45 min drive to pick it up. I should have the custom brushes for the electric motor done today so i will have it ready for the weekend. I will get two tubes of fluid then. Thanks again.

Re: Trim system oil.

Well why not ask the mechanic at the dealership or call one. I had a similar thing with lower unit oil. What I bought extra I figured I'd use the next time I changed it.....course lower unit oil is one thing.....trim fluid quite another....never change it.
