Trim tab manual settings?

I have a Fleetline Saphire 5 meter and it has trim tabs but missing the hydraulic pistons. I was just going to put two adjustable shackles on them and then lock them in position.

My question is this. Is there an ideal positioning for fixed trim tabs? Thanks for any help on this. :)

I moved this to Boat Topics. Probably fits best here.

The only answer to your question is from experience on board. You may not need any trim tabs, so hard to say where to set them. Typically tabs are used to control porpoise or side to side listing issues. Since they will be fixed, then the side to side list will change with weight distribution unless something is off that can't be moved. Underway, if the boat struggles tyo plane, you need them down a degree or two. If she porpoises at higher speeds, same thing, down another degree, try again.

Not sure there any other answers. I'd try with them off first, and then experiment from there.

^^^+1 The whole purpose of having trim tabs is to be able to adjust the boat while it is moving as conditions change such as weight balance, wind, waves etc. With fixed tabs you can't do that. Unless you have a specific and consistent problem you are trying to correct you really don't need them.

I was of the understanding that with the trim set to a certain position the boat would get up on plane sooner thus less throttle and more economical?

So if I set them at 90 degrees effectively extending the hull would that achieve my desire?

Re: Trim tab manual settings?

Fixed Trim Tabs are a little problematic, primarily because if they are angled down too far to help with getting on plane faster they will likely generate too much lift at higher speeds. This can cause handling issues such as bow steering, particularly if there is no power trim on the motor to counteract the unwanted stern lift. And even if you use power trim to bring the bow back up a bit you now have two counter acting forces that will generate a fair amount of drag.

Yes, adding the fixed Tabs at 90 degrees will add running surface aft and thus increase the lift there. Additionally as the bow rises while getting on plane the Trim Tabs will in effect be angled down due to the boat's attitude. This is sort of like lowering them a few degrees and also increase the lift they produce.

For these reasons I would suggest starting with them flush and parallel with the boat's hull surface. You can use a three foot straightedge to accomplish this. Then after you run the boat you could experiment with deflecting them in small increments while watching for any undesirable handling characteristics at higher speeds.

Of course remotely adjustable Trim Tabs offer the best control over all speed, water conditions and weight distribution.

A less expensive and easier to install option than remotely adjustable Trim Tabs, and a big step above fixed Trim Tabs, would be Smart Tabs or Bennett SLT Self Leveling Trim Tabs.

This type of Trim Tab will retract as water pressure increases under them as the boat goes faster, mitigating the problem of too much lift at higher speeds.

That would fall under a specific problem you are trying to correct. The best guy to answer any trim tab questions would be Tabman. I believe he is a rep for Bennett trim tabs. You might want to look him up.

Thanks, yes Tabman seems to have his hands on the helm correctly. I know adjustable ones are probably best but I have what I have and so until I launch this boat and get to see if it is something I will be doing a lot of I didn't want to spend any more than the bare necessities to get going. I will set them flush and parallel to start with.

Sounds like a plan.

Re: Trim tab manual settings?

First day on the water and the boat was a joy, I even caught a snapper. The purpose of the launch was to see how it all comes together as it was my first time. The trim setting was perfect, once up at plane I backed off the accelerator a quarter and she just purred along. I am heading out again today to fish...
