Trim Tab Problem

My boat came with a set of Bennett trim tabs ('93 Grady White 232G). The port side tab will go up when the rocker switch is depressed but won't go down when pressed the other way. I hear the motor when pressing Bow Up but it's silent when pressing towards Bow Down. The starboard one works fine and I can hear the motor when I press the switch both ways. Are their two motors per tab? Where should I start looking for the problem? Does it sound electrical or mechanical?
Any help would be appreciated... even if you tell me to get it professional done!

Re: Trim Tab Problem

It almost sounds like something simple like a bad switch (however when does something simple break on a boat?) If the posts from the link above don't help then try this one to Bennett's page for trouble shooting. Bennett Tab Troubleshooting

Re: Trim Tab Problem

Look at the switch or the wires connecting the switch to the pump.

First Boat,

I'm Thomas and I work for Bennett Marine in the Client Service Department.

Your boating buddies have provided quite a bit very good information for you to use to trouble shoot your trim tab system, so please give it a try and get back to us with your findings. It is most likely an electrical connection issue and the Trouble Shoot Guide link will help you isolate it quickly!

We look forward to your findings!

Sincerely,
MJ Thomas
Bennett Marine, Inc.
Client Services
trimtabs@earthlink.net
www.bennetttrimtabs.com

Re: Trim Tab Problem

Thanks everybody! I'm taking a printout of the Bennett troubleshooting guide with me to the boat this weekend. Hopefully it's a simple wire! I'll keep you posted and thanks again.

Re: Trim Tab Problem

I know this is an old post, but I am having a similar problem. The tab runs hard with the port tab switch in both directions but switching the starboard tab down I hear a weak or slow moving motor sound and no tab movement. I have inspected the connections at the quick connects and the switch and they all look good. Could a low fluid level effect only one tab? Any advice?

Re: Trim Tab Problem

Fav453,

Low fluid will not cause the problem you describe. It sousndes like a faulty solenoid, control, or connection. Try step 3 below, pay particular attention to the green wire when doing it as it controls the starboard solenoid.

Who old is the unit? Once you do the troubleshooting let me know what you find and we will be delighted to help get you going.

Tom
Bennett Marine

Fluid: Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) any type. Hydraulic Power Unit is self bleeding, running the Trim Tabs up and down 3-4 times will purge air from the system.

Fuse: 12 volt system use 20 amp in-line fuse on positive. (24v & 32v use proportionately smaller)

Red= Port Valve
Green= Starboard Valve
Blue=Motor Forward (pump pressure)
Yellow= Motor Reverse (pump retract)
Black on HPU=Ground
Orange on Helm=Control Positive

Troubleshooting

1.If one side is not operating reverse hydraulic lines on the front of the Hydraulic Power Unit to determine if the malfunction is in HPU or actuator / hydraulic lines. If after reversing the lines symptom shifts to the other side the malfunction may exist in HPU. If the symptom remains on the same side, malfunction may exist with the actuator / hydraulic lines

2. Is the unit receiving a solid 12 volts? Low voltage will some times cause the solenoids to not open preventing the tabs from moving even though the pump motor is running.

3. Conduct the following test:
Remove the wires from the helm control and touch together as follows:
Operation=Reaction
Orange (+), blue, red= Port trim tab down
Orange (+), blue, green=Starboard trim tab down
Orange (+), blue, red, green= Both trim tabs down
Orange (+), yellow, red= Port trim tab up
Orange (+), yellow, green=Starboard trim tab up
Orange (+), yellow, red, green= Both trim tabs up
If the trim tabs function correctly for each wire grouping then the switch is at fault. Also note that any loose or missing screws on the back of the switch (whether a wire is connected there or not) can cause the pump to malfunction.
This test may also be done right at the pump by substituting a "hot lead" for orange. There is usually a connector to the wire harness within a foot or so of the pump. You want to check this connection for corrosion. You may wish to cut the connector off on the pump side and try the test on bare wires.

4. If you suspect corrosion on the wire connector near the pump, cut it out, test as above and reconnect using butt splices.

5. If you conclude the problem is in the pump, contact me. Bennett Trim Tab Systems carry a five year warranty. We also offer a trade in program for units out of warranty. Contact us for further details after you troubleshoot the system.

6. Check to see if there is a relay in line on
the wiring harness near the hydraulic power unit. If there is it is an Interrupter Relay (IR1000). It prevents the system fuse from blowing if you try to actuate one trim tab up and the other down at the same time. After you test as outlined above, try removing the relay from the wiring harness and retest the unit. If it works the IR1000 will need to be replaced

Re: Trim Tab Problem

Well I ran through the troubleshooting guide that tabman indicated in other threads. I had the same results hot wiring the system. I reversed the lines and got the problem to jump to the other tab. The I looked at the solenoids. In researching the problem I remebered seeing that they should be finger tight. Well I tried to get them off and no luck till I got out the channel locks. Even then both were very tight. I looked at them an every thing looked OK (seals etc.) I reinstalled finger tight and both tabs run fine now. Why do you think the one side ran well even after being over tightened? (BTW I posted my question on another popular boating site I think you read. You will recognize my name is the same). Thanks either way.
