Hi fellow boaters, and lady boaters too. I have a marada 18 foot boat with a 4.3liter. I would like to install trim tabs. I would like to hear how you use them, do you still trim the drive, or does the trim tabs take place of trimming the drive?

thanks arkansas paul

Re: trim tab,s

While you can trim the bow up or down to some extent by adjusting both trimtabs, they are meant to trim the boat level from side to side.

Basically, if the weight distribution is even the slightest bit off, or the engine torques to either side, especially at higher speeds the boat will lean over to one side, trim tabs can compensate for that.

You would still use the drive trim the way you would before. The trim tabs just help to keep you level. (If I remember right the airplane terms would be that the drive trim adjusts your pitch (i.e. bow up or down) and the trim tabs adjust your roll).

Re: trim tab,s

Actually Trim Tabs are much more efficient at adjusting the boats fore and aft attitude than trimming the drive. The Drive can be trimmed to give you the best thrust i.e. props running parallel to the water, and the Tabs can adjust the boats attitude. On of the best things Tabs will do is let you hold the bow down at lowe speeds. This way you can run into a chop much more comfortably. They can of course trim from side to side as well. Using the airplane analogy, elevators (tabs) are used to adjust pitch not the propeller.

If you send your address to me at Tmcgow@bennetttrimtabs.com I will send you an owner's manual that covers how to use trim tabs and how to use them with your power trim. I am sure you will find it interesting. The information in the manual can be applied to any brand of Trim Tabs (I hope you buy Bennett but I don't want to spam!) :) .

I hope this helps,
Tom McGow
Bennett Marine
