trim tab

89 evinrude 40 hp noticed trim tab was broken. missing actual tab. can i run it without for a day. really wanted to get out on the water .

Is it a tiller or remote control as the steering torque will be increased and will be more noticeable with the tiller set-up. Keep this in mind and remember to account for the extra thrust feedback when you throttle up. Replace as soon as you can and be carefull as always.

thanks o/b tech. its a remote. whats the trick to getting the new one in the right position since the old one was broken in half. how critical is the positioning .

There's probably no sure way to position is correctly the first time you install it ... but I'd start with positioning it with the trailing end maybe 5 degrees to the right ... then try it out. If your boat pulls to the right, increase the angle a bit ... and re-try; if it pulls to the left, decrease the angle a bit ... and re-try it.

One word of caution ... be sure you use some blue (medium) Locktite on the bolt that secures the trim tab. I figured that out the hard way ... first one I installed "disappeared" on my first trip out!
