Re: trim tabs

only had experience with hydraulic, and they are no problem and low maintenance

i dont like the idea of smart tabs ( self regulating) as i like to be in control

electric?? nah dont want anymore electrical stuff hanging off the back

indicators would be good, but i just count to 10 and i know they are fully down

once running its very apparent when you make changes

i couldn't live without them, good for slow planing speeds and load compensation ( side to side, or even for cross winds)

as for size i think if you look at the manufacturers web site they have sizing recommendations

Re: trim tabs

its slow pick up when more than one person is in the boat. also weight distribution is an issue, and also wind has an effect.

Trim tabs maybe way down the road....but for now you need to go to a prop shop and get the right one.

Re: trim tabs

Electric should be much easier to install and cost less. I have had both hydraulic and electric. Presently have Lenco (electric) on my 25' Rosborough. Work fine ond so far no problems.
Good luck.

We have Bennett hydraulics on our boat. Give their CS department a call. They are one of the best and most customer centered organizations I have ever encountered. They can fix you up in no time.

Re: trim tabs

Pick up a copy of this month's Trailer Boats magazine. It has a pretty good article on trim tabs with a install guide with some nice pics in it. May help you a little bit.

Re: trim tabs

Lenco's came on my boat--about 5 years old. One actuator went out and the seller replaced it. Now the switch is out on one side--not sure yet if it's the pad or switch itself (seperate units) but the switch is sealed so you can't go in and look for a problem. Got to replace the whole thing for big bucks. However, the previous owner's wiring job was not very good. So I got 'em, will probably keep 'em and fix 'em, but don't know that I'd recommend the brand. BTW this is in salt water.

As for tabs themselves, I like them although I've gone without using them since the problem. I would not want anything "automatic"; I am the captain and I am in control!

Re: trim tabs

I love my Bennett Sport tabs, they have two rams on each tab, probably overkill but they are great. Superb customer service if you ever need them.

Check their website out, they even have a cool simulator.

Totally agree with the above... They even give you a discount on a new pump if you send them your old worn out one!!!!

Bennetts are AWESOME tabs!!!!

Re: trim tabs

I also have bennett trim tabs and love them. I put them on my 1980 boat in 1981
and it is the best thing I have ever installed on a boat.
I will never have a boat without helm controlled trim tabs and I believe Bennett is the best.
You can adjust for every wind condition and ever sea condition in under 5 seconds.
Makes my boat ride like it was 4 feet longer. I can stay on plane to 11 miles per hour.
Still if I have a following sea I can take them completely off and be safe.
Take them off at idle to reduce drag and gain speed.
Put one side down when comming to the dock with strong cross winds to help stop the bow from blowing down wind.
The most important for me is to adjust for running at lower speeds but still keep the
hull at the best angle for cutting waves and swells. Best safe ride in any condition.
Strong cross winds you can stop the boat from leaning into the wind and maintain course.

I use my Bennetts constantly, but that never occurred to me. I'll have to file that one away. Thanks for the tip!

Re: trim tabs

Just ordered the Lenco electric 12x12 tabs for my 1902 Trophy. The 12x12 are recommended for boats up to 30'.Seems to be a preference thing from past experiences for anyone ive talked to on which brand to order. Also I ordered with LED switch with auto retract. It will tell you where the tabs are at when using (no guessing),about twice the price of standard switch but I believe worth it.

I found out using one side can save the day during a sudden storm caught us out last year. As we were trying to get behind a marina to ride the storm out, I had to put one up, one down and I believe otherwise we would have swamped the boat.

Love my Bennetts!
