I just pulled off the cap for the trim tilt resivoir engine all the way up and it comes shooting out. I have read it is supposed to be at level with the hole is this right for the engine? or should it be filled as much as possible?

In the full tilt position, the reservoir should be filled just to the overflowing level. It would be a good idea when posting to enter the year of the engine if you know it, actually the model number would be best. Awful lot of 150s out there.

j150plees is what I see... It has a big resivoir tank on it... So just fill it until its over flowing and ram the cap on? this engine is actually a 99 with a 95 powerhead. I thought i made it so all that came up auto I guess not.

Is there a problem with the T/T other than the fluid ??

Re: trim tilt fluid johnson 150

no problems with it i just wanted to make sure there was enough fluid in it when i took the cap off it came pouring out. I tried to re fill it and the engine goes up and down but it makes a horrible noise now when i stop it going down and start it again.

Here's a pic of the bottle. They say to fill it and move the engine up and down with the cap off but when I move this trim down the bottle moves with it and dumps out the fluid so I am at a loss now.

I think i figured it out. I filled it up lifted the engine lowered with the manual release screw and I could hear air coming out so I just kept doing that and adding fluid. i'm still not 100% all the air is out but it's not making the crazy noise anymore. this forum is great but it keeps me up! lol

You always have the resivoir cap on when moving it up & down. Then check the level in the full tilt position.

So I just fill it until it's running out of the resivoir?

Ya I watched a youtube vid with the guy moving it with the cap off guess I shoulda done more research. Got it figured out though.

Does leaving the trim release screw open over night bleed air out of the trim system? I still have a bunch of air that will not escape

Re: trim tilt fluid johnson 150

I think i figured it out....again...lol It just took a lot more fluid than I thought it did. It started howling on the way down and it sounded to me like it needed more fluid I kept topping it up and bleeding with the release screw? I read that these self bleed is that true? 99 johnson 150 j150plees And is it even possible to bleed with the release screw? it does sound like air coming out when I open it... I just dont want to open the cap to bleed because that is what I did the other day and ended up running the fluid out but I suppose I should have been topping it up after I let took the cap off... do you know the capacity for this trim system?

What release screw?

If you're speaking of the manual release valve, therein lies your problem..... leave that manual release valve closed.

The air bleeds out automatically via the reservoir as you check the fluid level in the full tilt position..

Someone told me to raise the engine add fluid and let it down with the manual release screw to get the air out of it....

Re: trim tilt fluid johnson 150

when the system is down, all of the piston shafts are inside of the cylinder housings. An amount of oil equal to the shafts gets pushed back into the reservoir. The reservoir is designed to be airtight. The trapped air compresses to compensate for piston shaft movement.
when the system is lowered, the reservoir is pressurized. When the system is raised, the reservoir is not pressurized.

when the system is fully raised, all of the piston shafts are outside and the cyclinders are 100% oil filled. The air above the reservoir is decompressed and the fluid level is to the bottom of the filler plug.

If there is air in the system it will get pushed back to the reservoir and float to the surface. It is possible for a very small amount of air to become trapped under the piston and create a few thousandths inch of "bounce". In the factory, this air is eliminated. In the field, it is ignored. All other air gets forced back into the reservoir as the system is cycled up and down. Once the air reaches the reservoir it floats to the surface. As such, trim systems are self-bleeding. You simply fill while the system is fully raised, put cap back on, cycle a few times, and recheck. Some systems have a very fine nylon mesh debris filter. The filters can hold air bubbles. When working with such a system it is good to go have a beer before rechecking fluid levels.

Someone told you wrong...
close the manual release screw...
tilt all the way up - remove fill screw - fill with fluid - replace fill screw - lower - repeat as needed...

Re: trim tilt fluid johnson 150

I'm lost now... I have added new fluid cycled it a few times and when i pull the cap no air just some fluid comes out but I have a loud howl on the way down now.... Thought it was because of low fluid but it has to be full by now! It is not the bushings I know this because they are new. Wasn't making this noise before the fluid change.... could my pump be getting hot? trim works fine just sometimes when it's coming down it make the howling noise...

I took a garden hose to the trim and it seems to be working fine.. Think I over complicated it. Its pretty simple if you don't keep messing with it.
