Left manual at lake when I brought boat home to fix. 1990 200 merc.
It appears that the whole unit must be unbolted from the outboard in order to access the bolts to r&r the trim motor. Can the pin from the tilt ram be left in place while this is done? Anything I need to watch out for when removing trim motor?(cartridge type t&t motor)

Re: Trim/tilt motor replacement

You will most likely have to remove the six bolts that mount the T/T unit to the transom brackets. You don't have to remove the pin from the center ram, because the unit will swing out and you will get access to the trim motor. The screws that hold the motor down are like 4" long or so, so you will need the extra room of removing the T/T assembly from the brackets. Put some Loctite on the screws when you put the assembly back on. Overall, a pretty easy job, although the parts are pricey...

Just remove the side of the engine mount that is blocking the trim motor. Use a piece of wood or something to support that side of the engine. That's how I did mine. It was pretty easy.

I purchased a flexible extension for sockets. With this I was able to get the trim motor off without removing anything else. Make sure the seal on the motor is good, you don't want water getting in there. Good luck!

I hava a 1988 Bass Tracker with a 70HP Mercury on it. The power trim shorted out and I replaced the unit now every thing works except the switches won't raise the motor up I have replaced the silinoid and both switches what else could be causing this problem? I can raise the motor by jumping across the silinoid post

Check that you are getting 12 volts to the switch and when switch is activated you are getting 12 volts to solenoid. If you are then new solenoid is bad.

Make sure the trim wire goes behind the trim motor as to not get mashed by the motor when you trim all the way down.
OR put the cross pin in the last hole to keep the trim from going all the way down. G
