Trim/Tilt on 90 horse Rude

On the last run back to the dock to load the boat yesterday, after a weekend of slow but pretty good bass fishing, my power trim/tilt wouldn't raise my motor back up. Motor is an '87 Evinrude 90 horse V4, E90TLCUR. Had to release the manual release screw and lift the motor by hand. The rocker switch in the control will work the power trim down but when I rock the switch to lift the trim and tilt I get absolutely nothing. No clicks or any sound at all. Don't see any leaks anywhere around the trim/tilt unit and I don't think this is a fluid problem. Seems electrical in light of the switch just not activating the unit at all.

I only see one fuse in my manual for the entire trim/tilt and I pulled it and it's good. The manual doesn't state that there are any relays anywhere else that I could check. Are there? Also, I assume the control arm could be removed and the switch could be pulled apart, although it seems odd that a rocker switch would just quit on one side. The manual does provide details on how to check other electrical connections, etc. but I think I may just have a shop do those for me instead trying it.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Mark
Minneapolis

Re: Trim/Tilt on 90 horse Rude

The electric motor on that PTT is a dual polarity motor, meaning if it works in one direction, it's okay and will work in the other direction.

You have either got a defective PTT switch, a broken wire, a loose connection, or a faulty relay in the PTT junction box.

Remove the hood, find the black plastic PTT junction box, remove the box cover, then switch the relays. If the problem is now reversed, you have a faulty relay.

Joe,

Thanks for the help. Spent more time with my manual last night and checked the connectors and the relays for t/t. Both relays and a plastic wire connector were really gummed up bad with a black, gooey gunk. I doubt they have ever been pulled apart over the past 17 years. Appears that the relay for up-tilt just wasn't getting a good connection any longer. Cleaned everything and put the connections back together and it works great again. Thanks, Joe. That's the first time I've been able to fix something on the this boat that didn't cost me an arm and leg.

Mark
Minneapolis
