Trim/Tilt Problem

I have a 3 button in-handle two solenoid PTTS on my 1980 470 ( no trailer switch and no indicator gauge). She goes up and out fine but she won't go down. I can hear the down solenoid "clicking" on the pump but nothin happens. I disconnected and cleaned all the connections with no improvement. Battery is new. I haven't been able to do a voltage/continuity test as I was alone this weekend and I don't have a 10 ft arm span. I tried bypassing the solenoid hooking directly to the battery - it didn't seem to like that. Lots of arcing when I completed the circuit - I did it quickly so I hope I had the leads right.

I'll test the circuit tonight with my "helper" . However if I assume the connections are good it kinda points to a bad secondary side on the solenoid given the primary seems to be working ( I hear clicking) Has any body had a similar fault? Any other suggestions? Has anybody serviced/repaired these solenoids before?

Just because a solenoid clicks doesn't mean it works.Replace the solenoid if it's bad.The fix will only be temporary.Been there done that. :D

Re: Trim/Tilt Problem

The primary side of the solonoid was fine - hence the "clicking". The secondary side was bad. Althought contact was made the contacts had corroded and the resistance was a few mega ohms. Replaced the solenoid last night - wouldn't you know it the replacement ( new from the box) was a dud. When all hooked up nothing happened. Took it off and checked it off line. Nothin. The primary side was OC - off to get a replacement today.
