1989 sea ray with bravo one outdrive-i lowered the outdrive and after completing the downward movement, the outdrive came right back up while the pump motor continued running.i am assumoing this is a relief valve failure.if so,is this the down pressure valve failing or the up valve failing.i want to purchase the correct repair kit.

A relief valve wouldn't explain why the motor kept running would it? Sounds like an electrical problem to me.

Check and see if the "up" solenoid is stuck.

Sounds more electrical to me also.
To isolate rather it's your helm control or back on the trim pump. Disconnet the 3 wire harness from the pump and see if the motor still runs. Is your trim switch in the throttle handle?
