trim tilt question

Hello,

I picked up a 74' Starcraft American 20 with a mercruiser 165 with I believe a type I outdrive. The motor runs sweet and the O/D shifts with out any problem BUT I can't get the tirm/tilt to raise or lower the LU. I can lift the unit with some effort and it will settle to the "almost" down position when you let it go.

When I hit the toggle switch for down, I just get a click sound. When I toggle up, I get no clicking or anything. I believe the top toggle W/ a red light is for the tilt up trailer setting. I get nothing when I hit that switch too.

Can someone tell me where I can start to try to rectify this situation? I am not very good at "testing" electrical components with amp meters and such but I am willing to swap out some parts with some recomendations.

Prolly the selonoid, very common problem. About 12 bucks new in these parts. Should be next to the pump, with all the colored wires connected to it. Yea, 80 degrees here today

Thanks for the response. I think I will replace the solenoid for $12.00 and go from there. Could I use an automotive one or should I break the bank at West Marine to get a Marine solenoid?

80 degrees that's tough. We had light snow flurries today.

When dealing with anything electrical your better off buying just marine parts as they are spark resistant. It's worth a few extra bucks to avoid this:

Good advice, I will pick up a marine solenoid on my way home from work today and hopefully have it installed before it gets dark!!

Well I installed the "side" solenoid and got the pump to fire up. Unfortunately, it only works in the down position. When I hit the up toggle, the light comes on but nothing happens. when I hit the trailer/out toggle, the light does not come on and the motor does not activate.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to get the unit to go up?? So far the advice has been great!!

I would figure if you can pickup the drive there could be some hydraulic issues. Guess you can get around to those once you get the trim to work correctly. First issue since it will not go up check connections with the Blue/Wht wire. Here is the wiring diagram
