Hi. I have a 1992 evinrude 175hp. It needed a pump motor when I got it. I pulled the whole trim/tilt assembly off and changed the motor. While on the bench, I filled it and raised it. Tried to lower it and it won't go down. I am using test leads directly to a battery, so I know its not a relay or switch issue. I can get it to lower by unscrewing the relief. I can then raise it but when I switch polarity the motor runs but it won't go down. I then took everything apart sprayed it out with brake cleaner and air, reassembled and still the same. Questions: Does it need the weight of the motor to go down? I found a complete outboard (1996 evinrude 150)... Will that trim/tilt assembly fit my 92 175? Thanks for any help. Jon

That PTT unit has two trim cylinders and a single tilt cylinder, right? The trim cylinders will not retract on their own. The trim cylinder pulls the motor down, to compress the trim cylinders. It therefore acts differently when not installed on the motor.

Chris, Thank you for the info. The tilt is not going down either. Do you think its worth putting it back on the boat and trying it with the weight of the motor? Thanks again, Jon
