i have a 1970 evinrude 115 hp model # 115083D and it does not have power trim tilt unit on it. i want one on it because we beach alot at the river and my wife isn't strong enough to lift the motor by herself and is afraid to wreck the boat driving onto the beach. my question is can i put one on it? and if so which one will fit. im wanting to go used and rebuild (im a mechanic by trade) cause they can get quite expensive new or aftermarket.

any and all help will be greatly appreciated

Short answer No and Yes. No you do NOT want a factory unit since it will set you back a small fortune ore you will have to find a used one (Near impossible) BUT if you mount it on a CMC unit you will be hapier and better off in the long run CMC Electric Hydraulic Power Tilt And Trim

The only thing that will fit on that motor is power tilt only, if you could find one. The best bet would be the CMC as mentioned above.

Re: trim tilt units?

Your earlier model uses the two side clamp brackets to hold the engine to the boat. As such OMC only made factory tilt units for those engines up through the 72 model year. The engine's clamp bracket changed in 1973, the first year OMC introduced the first tilt/trim units for the V4's. That 73-76 factory trim is really not retrofittable to your year's engine. Best to look for an aftermarket unit, like the CMC Bob suggested.

Very expensive, whatever you find. There is a tilt-assist device out there that may do the trick for you. It's essentially a lever that is placed on the hood of the motor, hooks on the back of the hood, and allows you to tilt the motor up much more easily. iboats might have it, or do a search on Ebay to see if you can find one to see what it is -- sorry, don't recall what it's called. Maybe another lister can help. (might be called something simple minded like a motor tilter -- try that as a search.)

note: got it. made by Garelick and called a motor tilter (about $80 retail. would assist in full tilt, at least -- used one of these with a 1970 85hp, and it worked great.)

power lift would be sufficient, and i had the motor tilter in mind i will look closer into both of those. the CMC looks amazing but i only paid 125$ for the boat so im having problems spending that kind of money on it. however i may not have any other options. keep the ideas coming i love the input

Excellent question Clutz.

Since the CMC tilt/trim system has been mentioned, can anyone here post some links or pictures that show how to mount an old, pre tilt tube OMC V4 like Clutz's 115, to one of these brackets and clearly show how to deal with relocating the transom mounted steering cable system that many of these motors use?

I've looked, but can't find one example of a 1970's V4 mounted to a CMC or Panther bracket.

Again, I would call CMC as they manufacture it and should have some good ideas.

Re: trim tilt units?

I used to have and older 85hp Evinrude that had a CNC tilt on it. There is a bracket that mounts on the boat to hold the steering cable and will let the cable move with the motor when it is tilted. I will have to see if I still have that unit as I have junked out the boat because of a rotted transom, but I did keep all the controls and the motor as it ran fine at that time. I'll return when I find the parts. If I remember correctly that unit was a Tela Flex setup.

mine is the old cable and pulley steering set up so i don't foresee an issue since i have to replace the old cable anyway
