Trim vs tilt

I have a trim switch on the throttle lever. What's with the "tilt" terminology?

As far as I know, I trim all the way down to get the boat on plane as fast as possibe. Once up to speed, I would trim up to a little below the mid point.

I don't get it what's the difference between trim and tilt.

Trim is the range in which the boat can be operated.....

Tilt is the range Above that which it should be operated......

Like Bondo said. Tilt is the travel to lift the engine for trailering.

There is a difference when referring to different boat manufacturers.

Older Volvo Penta set-ups have a tilt motor instead of a trim motor. The tilt motor allows you to tilt the motor for trailering. The tilt function is used when the engine is in neutral not while running, don't ask me how I know or how expensive it was. To adjust the trim on one of these older VPs, you have to move a pin manually.

Trim is typically referred to as "in", (towards transom) & "out", (away from transom). Tilt is "up/down"
On OMC stringers up to '86, there were 2 independent systems for the 2 functions, hydraulic trim and reducer gear/clutch tilt.
