Re: trim will not go down

Hi Dave!

Does the trim motor run? If so your problem might not be the trim motor at all.

I've had this problem before. The hydrolic cylinders may need to be rebuilt or replaced (mine had to be replaced.)

The motor creates plenty of pressure to lift the outdrive but once raised it relies more on gravity to lower the outdrive. If the cylinders are corroded inside the outdrive will not go down.

Try standing on the outdrive while running the trim motor down.

This happened to me in the water once. I had to go overboard and disconnect the trim cylinders from the outdrive. This dropped the outdrive all the way down and made forward motion no problem... reverse was an impossibility but I was able to get back in for repairs. It beats the cost of towing!

Good Luck,
Honest Stranger

Re: trim will not go down

Two things could possibly cause this. One, the switch in the handle is bad or the down relay is bad. I doubt it is in the trim cylinders. I have a lot of years experience with Volvo's. If you have any other questions you can call me at
1-800-949-2189
