What do you mean it only works with the engine? Might also help to mention what you're working on.

1986 could be a Cobra or a Stringer - Does your drive have trim rams on the sides?

The Stringer is totally different. The trim moves the entire engine and drive. The tilt just brings the drive up and down.

Hello south its a stinger 800 its my first boat so new too it all.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,.... Yer trim is workin' as it should,....

The tilt is controlled by another electric motor, down low, aft, port-side, by the transom,.....

on a stringer, your trim is from the switch in the gear lever, and your tilt is controlled by a switch on your dash. you need to be all up, or all down

when you go all down you will hear "whir...whir...whir...clunk"
when you go up, you will hear "whiiiiirrrrrrr.........whiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrr............whiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrr........whiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrr.....moannnninggggg from motor...... " and your drive is up.

^^^^ Awesome description :)

Your trim is located at the front of the engine inside the boat. I'm guessing you have hydraulic, but there was a mechanical version as well.

Tilt is as the back of the engine. The tilt motor is on the port side, bottom of the intermediate housing (basically find a way to get yourself into the bilge, at the bottom left). It drives a clutch at motor you'll see on the stern drive with a big quadrant gear.

The Stringer is designed to run with the engine tilted all the way down - and then you can trim as necessary. In shallow water you can tilt up and put along at very low RPM, but you want to be gentle with that. From your description, the tilt is what's not working. Most often, it's the tilt motor - which is a pull / rebuilt or replace / and put back plan.

I would start by making sure the drive will move on the tilt pivots by lubricating them. Then be sure your battery is fully charged. Test the solenoids to make sure they're working ... and if all of those are doing their thing: it's time to check the motor.

Thanks to everyone. What im really trying to do is pulling the engine out to be rebuilt and the outdrive out too like to drain the outdrive of oil before i do. Yesterday i pulled out both exhaust manifold out dam they weigh a lot lol. I found some wires that where fixed but one was cut didn't go any where one was black -brown went to the solenoid the another one was green with white that was cut? When i push the button all it does is the hydraulics move the motor up and stops thats as far as it goes.

Ayuh,...... Not to tryin' dissuade you,.......... But,......

Yer startin' with a broke down worn out obsolete driveline, that few still know how to fix 'em,.....
If you can get the parts,... used is sometimes the only option,....

If yer in Love with this hull,.... Now is the time to swap in a Merc or Volvo driveline from a donor boat,......

You've got 1 of the least desirable drivelines there is,....

I'm doin' the exact same thing to an Old Town Atlantis right now,......
a '73 stringer/ Ford, to a 350 Chevy/ Bravo drive,....

Listen to Bondo if you're having to go "all in" on this boat: the drive system is an antique, and many marine techs out there haven't really seen one - let alone work on one. It will - in it's best condition - require attention even more so than an antique car would.

If you're really tied to it, you can rehab the boat - but it's a lot of time and money. Likely, for the same amount of money, you can find a mostly lake ready boat in reasonable condition with a more modern Merc or Volvo set in it.

I like the Stringer drive (it's a problem I have ), but it's not like owning a normal recreational trailer boat.

Thank you for the help but yourgone think im mad but im giving it a try and fix it.

you own a boat, you are already mad

keeping a stringer.... that just means you like to spend money and work on things more than going boating.

the lower shift cable on the stringer is $750 do not damage it when you pull off the drive

a ball-gear kit is about $175

a water pump kit is about $70

the three vertical driveshafts you will end up replacing because the splines go out will be about $500

the transom boot is about $160

the tilt motor is about $120

get a factory manual from outboardbooks.com
see the videos at sterndrive.info

That explains alot......
It gets worse ... I actually like the electric shift

But I also dig cars with round headlights, so there's a balance there right? Got to drive a 1960 Edsel today. Great styling, lots of power ... and HUGE.

Just go in eyes wide open, and know at what point you have to bail out. It may be fun and cool to bring an older boat back to life. The Stringer ain't all bad ... but it'll test ya' some days.
