Trims up in reverse

I was given a 1973 TriSonic 140 Mercursier. It had not seen water in at least 8 years. I took it out several times this summer to test the powertrain which worked well. I purchase the Jim Anderson book, "Runabout Renovation",recommended by several people from this site, which is a great book by the way Thanks! I have started redoing the floor, stringers, and transom (all rotten from sitting under a tree collecting water. Currently the boat is in pieces in my back yard. So I am working on some mechanical issues while everthing is within easier access, motor, sterndrive, and transom plate all taken out.

One problem I noticed why checking is out is that it would automatically start to trim up when going in reverse and make a whistle sound from the trim pump area. Also would automatically trim up a little when I would stop suddenly and my wake would catch up to me. I have the Clymer Shop repair manual but it does not speak much on this subject.

Any Ideas?

Thanks for any help!

Sounds like you have short in some wire or a faulty switch...problem seems to be random. :( Is the trim switch on the throttle/shift lever...I'll bet it is? Probably need to take it apart and check it. ;)

Re: Trims up in reverse

The trim control is a 3 button switch on the dash.
x-Out
x-Up
x-Down

To bypass the trim limit switch Out & Up buttom must be pressed at the same time to trailer the boat.

Trim seems to work OK otherwise. I was thinking that it may be a weak relief valve in the trim control valve assembly. Don't know.

Usually starts trimming when I go faster in reverse. If I go very very slow it is ok.

Re: Trims up in reverse

That old of system has a reverse lock out valve inside the boat. Follow the trim line up to the plate at the rear of the engine and it will go through the valve that is attached to the shift cable. Either the valve isn't adjusted correctly or leaking. If there isn't a valve, then someone has bypassed it.

I have seen the reverse lock valve (I have compared my trim layout to the illustrations in ths Shop Manual). Any ideas on how to adjust it?

Check for air in the system prior to doing anything else!! Lower the drive all the way and top off the resivior to the bottom of the threads where the screw goes in. Make sure that the little vent screw is not tightened down all the way. Recheck if it's still too "loose" when in reverse and in a "trailing" situation.
