Planning to motor from Norwalk, CT to LBI, NJ this summer in a 23' Grady w/250 yamaha. Any tips or suggestions? Should I go through the Manisquan inlet to the intercoastal or stay in the ocean till Barnegat? How long should it take? Is that enough power.

What part of LBI?

The bay can get crazy in the summer.

Let me know how your plans work out. I'm in Barnegat, NJ and my wife wants to do the opposite of you. She wants us to take the boat up to CT. We also have a 23' walkaround.

Do you plan to go to LBI via ocean all the way?
Rather than go thru Manasquan, I would enter via OLD BARNEY, watch other boats when entering,as the currents can be "Very Tricky".There are a lot of marinas along the ICW,so fuel should'nt be a problem. If you plan on going to the south end of LBI, it is a 20 mile run from Barny to LE inlet. From there it is about an hour to Atlantic City,marinas..Over all trip; I would plan on 2 nights stay depending on the seas, you might make it in one O/N stay, depends how beat up you'r wife gets..Also it would be a good idea to have a GPS chart plotter on board, you will always know where you are and distance/time to next WP. Don't go with-out-it!

Re: Trip from CT to LBI NJ

We're staying in Brant Beach but I'd like to dock closer to the LE inlet (that's where I fish!). I was planning to go the ocean the whole way, weather permitting. I thought it would be faster. We're planning to start out in the LI Sound, go down the east river to NY harbor, around Sandy Hook down to Manasquan or Barney. It appears to be about (I mapped it out as best I could) 115 miles. I thought I could do it in a day (long day!), do you think it's possible or am I nuts!? I will have a GPS and charts but no radar. Can I go 25 kts along the ICW or will I be restricted? Is the ICW a maze of channels that I'll have to negotiate most of the time? Is going along the ICW longer than the ocean?

rbu, I'll definitely post my experience! Hopefully it'll be a good one!

I feel sorry for your wife! I am a wife with who wouldn't do it in a 28 foot boat let alone a smaller one. Call me chicken!

Pursuit2150, Thanks for your input. Do you think it's possible for a couple of guys and some fishing rods to make this trip in a day! The wives are gonna drive the stuff and kids in the cars and we're gonna take the boat! If I can't do it in one day, I might not take it on! Let me know what you think!! Thanks!

First Boat- I never made a trip that long,if the weather is good,ie.seas and wind you can do it. The normal winds along LBI are out of the SE. The trip when entering Barnegat to Brant Beach is about 12 miles, 50/50 no wake, if it's a good day you might be better off staying outside an enter at LE. From there Brant Beach is about 20 Min. If you go to Le, next to B,C,D,E,F,G,(Don't worry about A,I don't why it's there). THEN GO TO 121.STAY ON THE MARKERS IN THE INLET,THERE ARE SHALLOW AREAS.I have all the waypoints from LE to G&121,I go out of there every week.Glad to help!! If you need info for LBI go to www.lbinet.com and brouse.
