Thanks to all for all the help and guidance. I'm going upon EBay to buy the service manuel. I'm assuming these old ones are not avail on the net for free.

Nope, the manual you need is not online. There are VERY FEW of the Merc Manuals actually online. I think of the over 50 manuals that Mercruiser has out, only 5 are available free.
