Most pontoon boats are usually back-heavy, so putting a battery up front under a seat helps to level the boat a bit. That is where I keep my spare battery and it levels it a tad.

+1, better balance, closer to the motor for more efficient operation.
When selecting a battery weight counts. I've had good luck with Deka batteries
group 27 or 31 deep cycle. The heavier battery will run longer, discharge less
and have a longer life.

my #1 battery is back near the motor, and I plan on Installing #2 battery for trolling, on the other side of the motor area. so they will be closer to the onboard charger.

Ya, you want the battery as close to the troller as possible, they suck alot of power and the more wire you run the less efficient they are and you get the benafit of having weight up front.

6 ga. wire runs around $ 1.86 a foot where I live, and you need two wires. I just bought a new troller and I put the batt. up front, saved around $ 100.00
