Trolling Motor Battery

I have a deep cycle battery that is on my Trolling Motor only, some times it gets low, can a person hook it up to the electrical panel of the starting battery so it can be charged or will it harm the charging ckt. its on a 115 mercury outboard. thinking it could be charged thru a 20 amp fuse then disconnected after charging or just leave it hooked up with a blocking Diode in place,(to keep TM battery isolated from panel.

A dual battery switch like a Perko switch will do what you want.

It will to a point. Unless the outboard has a very high output, you would need to run wide open for hours to charge a deeply discharged trolling motor battery. Most outboards are not so equipped. Look at it this way. An average troller will draw 20 amps at something less than it's fastest speed. An outboard with a 20 amp alternator would therefore need to run wide open for well over an hour to replace the current used by the troller in one hour. Does that sound practical???

yes that sounds right, how about if i just left it hooked up to the panel like i was saying with a blocking diode and it would charge every time the engine was run. that should keep it topped off if the TM battery was not discharged completly..just a thought
