I am trying to decide on a trolling motor for my boat. Am looking at the mk powerdrive or the terrova. Don't want to spend the extra cash for the terrova if it won't be worth it. Also wondering how well the autopilot works and if I would be better off going for 12 or 24 volt setup. Thanks for any input you may have.

Re: trolling motor decision

You will get a lot more replys if you give people enough information to help you.
If it a 28 foot bayliner you need a 36 volt trolling motor at least but
if it a 12 foot car top aluminum a low power 12 volt is all you need.

I think the auto pilot is great and worth the money also the remote controls worth looking at, but this is all personal preference.

For me it took almost 6 months before I could run the foot controlled bow mount trolling motor and catch fish. When My partner ran the boat I would catch twice as many fish as when I ran the motor. After about 6 months I caught more fish while running the motor than when my partner was running but by that time you do not even think about the motor, it becomes automatic and you postion the boat right where you want it with out thinking about it. At this point you are again putting all your attention on your line and casting.

One thing about size you want a bigger motor than you need and one with a good power saver. The power saver work very well to save the battery on low power setting. When you have to kick it up on high the power saver saves very little power. So the battery will last longer with a large power saver trolling motor then with a smaller motor of any kind.

Can't help you without knowing what size boat you are trying to pull with the electric troller and how many hours you intend to use it without charging.

Re: trolling motor decision

Here is more info on my boat, it's 17ft deep v and weighs about 2000 lbs. with motors. I usually use the trolling motor to fish the shore so it won't be running for extended periods of time but I would like to have as much time between charges as possible. I know I need at least 55lbs. of thrust but my boat is set up for 24 volts and thought I might like 70lbs. and maybe more time between charges.

55# would work fine, but the 70# 24 volt setup will allow you to troll all day. Don't go cheap on the batteries and get at least 27 series deep cycle.
