Trolling motor head and motor swap

I have a used 45# thrust Motorguide Brute trolling motor, 12 volt. The bearings went out in the shaft and the foot pedal will not turn the head anymore.

I just bought on a whim a used Motorguide Brute 767 with 67# thrust trolling motor, 24 volt, with the electrical head occasionally causing a ruckus by occasionally taking off on its own.

I bought it for $15 hoping I would be able to interchange parts, but not sure if that is possible with the different voltages. Worst case scenario I try to figure out what is causing the electrical problems on the 767.

Would I be able to switch heads or motors on these units?

if you are just substituting the motor the 24v will quite happily run on 12v....thats what I do all the time with my 24v 86 lb troller...BUT you post did not make it 100% clear if you want to rebuild the 12v or use the 24v and which parts you wanted to exchange.

Thanks bongo. I want to put the head off of the 12 volt unit and use the 67# motor.

My concern would be that my battery life would be quite poor doing that.

If you intend to use the 24 volt motor with a single battery and the 12 volt head unit you will certainly not have the power that motor would have running on 24 volts. Depending on the electronics in both the motor and the head unit, 24 volt electronics may not function correctly on 12 volts.

Thanks Silver. I now hope I can correct the 24 volt electrical problem.

Re: Trolling motor head and motor swap

you will find that the application of a heat gun to your prop and a tweak to increase the pitch will give you all the thrust you neeed to bring you up to boat speed.

with regard to your 24v going full speed all on its own ...it is unlikley that its the mosfet as if these go they usually disintegrate . so we are looking at the control for the mosfet....It could be as easy as a problem with the control potentiometer being worn....or haveing got damp or water in it ....
