trolling motor problems

I just bought a used 98 nitro 700lx (first boat) and I'm pretty clueless. I just ran it for the first time today the engine ran great but the trolling motor would work, and then stop, then go, and so on and so on. Plus the alignment was screwy...what was supposed to be straight (according to the manual) was hard right. The batteries are supposed to be new. FYI..the trolling motor is a motor guide 50lbs thrust.
Could the power issues be damaged batteries from winter via the previous owner, despite that he got them in August? Is it a fuse? Other?
Is the steering issue common? How do you fix?

Re: trolling motor problems

I would first check the connections to the battery for the go, no go problems. If you are using the clip type connections move them around a bit on the terminals and pull the handles open which then tightens the force on connection.

The orientation problem, could be, depending on the type of motor that you have, how the motor is oriented in the bracket. With some motors, you can rotate them in the bracket to get the correct orientation.

Hope this helps.
