Trolling motor restart, Help

Johnson 1988 28hp SPL: Here is the problem, I am trolling along and the motor is running OK at low rpm?s; we hook up with a trout, shift the motor into neutral and while we were are in the process of boating the fish the motor stalls out. Motor runs strong WOT and appears not to miss a beat.

When attempting to restart the motor I discover it takes numerous tries. The motor will fire off & run a few seconds and stall out, this cycle repeats itself 4 > 5 time before continuing to run. When the motor restarts the throttle is very temperamental, you have to advance it very, very slowly or it will (bog down?) stall out.

After the motor catches up to itself and settles down, it will for the most part run OK, until the next fish comes along and the cycle repeats itself. It will at times stall-out during a trolling run (low RPM?s) and the problem described above occurs.

One the things I am finding prior to the restart is that there is no pressure being maintained in the primer bulb. I have found that by pumping the bulb pressure ?back up? it appears to help on the restarts.

Thanks folks for any help you can provide.

Try another tank/fuel line/primer bulb. If it happens again, you have a fuel pump problem. If not, there's a valve worn out somewhere between the tank and outboard in the fuel delivery line.

Re: Trolling motor restart, Help

I rebuilt the carburetor (end of last season); I soaked it in carb-cleaner? I now understand that was not so good. I cleaned and blew out all internal passages with 80 PSI, and replaced the worn parts with those supplied in the kit. I made adjustment to the float and attempted low speed idle adjustment as outlined in the kit instructions.

This was no fuel filter installed between the tank and the fuel pump. I installed a dealer supplied inline fuel filter upstream from the pump, as illustrated in the Johnson service manual. I removed cleaned, inspected and re-installed the fuel pump. Are there rebuild kits available for my model / type of pump? Or am I better off buying a new pump?

I have not de-carb this motor. This last 6 gal tank of gas I added 6oz of Sea Foam and ran it through as I fished. Would I need to de-carb the motor now? Did I put the cart before the horse? I have been known to do that before?..

The tank is a Tempo and I plan to flush it prior to replacing the fuel line and primer bulb. This motor would not require a special type of tank would it? My current tank appears to be quite a bit different than the one illustrated in Johnson service manual

the tank is fine. cart before horse yes. decarb, you can just use seafoam in a spray bottle, instead of deep creep, same stuff. warm the engine on muffs, remove the plugs spray some in the cylinders, let sit 15 min. then remove air silencer in front of carb. start again, spray seafoam into the carb until it almost dies. 3 or 4 times until it quits smoking. and your done. replace the spark plugs. after the decarb. run seafoam in your fuel mix forever afterwards.

Thanks I?ll de-carb as you have described.

I have two quick questions. (1) I have seen where in past posts some recommendations are to use muffs, I use a ? barrel. Good or bad for motor? I do own a set of muffs. (2) This motor did not come with an air silencer, how may this be impacting my motor/ problem?

some are designed with out the air silencer. i prefer muffs, the exhaust turbulence in a barrel can effect the water pickup. they are cheap at walmart. the vintage motor, 50's 60's have to be in a barrel. i use a big garbage can.
