Trolling Motor Wiring/Plug: One Last Time

I thought I'd just posted this, but I don't see it, so here goes again:

I've abandoned my old Evinrude 12/24 volt trolling motor due to problems with the power (it was very weak). That was a four wire system, direct from the batteries, to a four pronged Marinco plug at the bow.

Well, that old Evinrude trolling motor is in storage, and I now have a 24 volt MinnKota Edge, bow mount. I've wired the batteries in series and I get 24 volts at the appropriate female receptacles at the four pronged bow plug. Of course, that means I just use 2 wires, one black and one red, and I've abandoned the other two.

However, using a mutitester, it is a bit tricky to register the 24 volts. I really had to fiddle with the mutitester.

My question is this. Do those Marinco plugs go bad with any frequency? I'd think I could register the voltage quite easy inside that plug using a mutitester. It makes me wonder if that was the problem with my old 12/24 Evinrude. I'd think those plugs would be good for decades in the absence of visible corrosion or rust. Mine looks clean as best I can see. I'm referring to the female end of the plug fixed into the bow.

Anyway, your thoughts would be appreciated (I hope my lost post doesn't now just pop up).

If the motor runs ok then the receptacle and plug are ok. If not, there is probably an issue with one or the other or both. I can't watch you when you are testing but I can tell you sticking a smallish meter probe into a comparatively large contact slot may require some fiddling. When you get a measurement and it's 24 volts, you have 24 volts present.

Why do I always have more questions! Sorry--

Here goes: Does that jumper wire from negative to positive need a circuit breaker on it?

Do I hook up my dual battery onboard battery charger the same way as when my two batteries were four direct wires? In other words, each charging pair to each battery separately?
