trolling motor wiring

I'm installing a 24 volt trolling motor and was more or less doing it exactly as in the diagram at the thread linked below without the onboard chargers.

I thought the 24v system was completely isolated from the 12v engine system. At least that's how I was going to do it.

In this diagram it shows a connection to the negative, both systems. "to eliminate ground float"

Is this necessary or can the 24v system exist in the boat with no ground connection to the motor? I feel like this is a dumb question, but want to get this right.

Not sure why they decided to run a ground from the 12 bolt battery in the 24 volt trolling motor setup. I would think keeping them separated would offer a better RFI protection to other circuits. So maybe they can chime in to explain that wiring setup... :noidea:
