I have a problem with my cobra 12/24v trolling motor. The 12/24 switch (on the foot control) on 12v the motor will turn the prop the correct direction but, on 24v the prop will turn backwards. I have 2 12v trolling batteries in the back of the boat with 4 cables (2 black 2 red) coming from the front of the boat that are conected red to red, black to black. The batteries are charged correctly (not backwards) but I,m not sure what to try. My boat is a 89 Stratos 279 FS w/ a 150 Evinrude.

Re: trolling motor

Switch is bad(12/24)...12volt side works but not the 24...this will cause the reverse problem.

Re: trolling motor

If your cables are hooked red to red and black to black you don't have 24V you have 12V in parallel. There are two ways to wire 24V motors. since yours is a 12 OR 24V version you should have three wires (usually red, orange, and black, or red, white and black) running from the motor to a connector. The black wire is ground which should connect to the two black wires from the batteries. The red wire from one battery should connect to the red wire going to the motor. The red wire from the other battery should connect to the white wire going to the motor. The 12/24 switch will make the proper internal connections.

Re: trolling motor

What he's explaining is typical of a pre-wire for 12 or 24....2 red, and 2 black going fwd...<br />If the 12/24 switch up front goes bad and is getting 12 volts with a 24vlt system, it will run the oposite direction when moved from 24 to 12 and visa versa.
