I recently ordered a new pontoon set up for fishing
But it doesnt have a trolling motor

I dont really want to blow 700 dollars on a trolling motor unless it is really worth it

What do you guys think

Depends a lot on what type fishing you do. I fish mainly for crappie and wouldn't dream of not having a trolling motor.

We normally just find a place and anchor and fish, but still use and need a trolling motor. Get one. Even if it is a cheaper one. You won't be sorry.

One bigger thing, sorry I did not mention it before....with a trolling motor you have a back up for your regular gas motor if you get stranded somewhere due to a mechanical problem. Even a new motor can fail, or you might run out of gas or worse yet, lose a prop due to underwater logs or rocks. A trolling motor can get you back to the ramp or at least to shore in this case.

What they ^^^ said. Yes, you need a troller, but it doesn't have to cost $700. You can find adequate ones on CL for under $100.

yes i see your point but the problem for me is that the trolling motor has to be mounted in the front on a pontoon
but my fishing station is in the back so i would need a wireless pedal or remote and those setups will typically cost more than 100 dollars.

I agree with the previous post. You need one more for backup than fishing. Beats paddles!

You might get by with a rear mounted trolling motor...see those quite often, or, there is a type that mount to the lower unit of your motor. Of course the motor mounted units are expensive, but a rear mounted one should do. My guess is for 300-500 bucks you could get one that is nice, maybe less. Important thing is getting one with the right amount of POWER for your size boat.

Have you ever been around a trolling motor out there? Nice and quite. I agree with the above said too.

This forum is supposed to be about fishing tackle and techniques. It has not turned out to be that, so I am going to move this to the trollers forum.
