I need to know if when you take a boat out of the water with a trolling motor, can water get trapped in the motor and therefore, be transferred into the next body of water the motor is put down in? Thanks so much for any help all you experts out there can give me!

If its a gas trolling motor, (although they are designed to drain when lifted out), there is always a chance they don't drain thoroughly, especially if they were operated in weedy conditions. Drain holes can get plugged.

Re: TROLLING MOTORS: HELP I HAVE A QUESTION?

I have no experience with gas trolling motors, but with electrics, if you allow the motor a reasonable amount of time to dry out, there shouldn't be any water left in it.
I have a Great White 36lb thrust that will be totally dry after a few hours. Besides, there's really no gaps for water to enter in the motor itself, allthough it can get behind the prop. If you give it sufficient amount of time to dry, there shouldn't be any water in it.

If you don't mind me asking, why would you be concerned about exchanging water from one body to another?

I see someone gets the point! here in Oklahoma we are ask to wait at least a week before putting in @ another body of water, and to inspect for marine life on/in our equipment. It is up to us to help our environment, or destroy it!

Richard

thanks for all the replys! I am glad someone understood why I was asking. We are concerned about the transfer of invasive exotic species from one body to another. Thanks!

Hi Jane. To remove/kill spores, seeds or eggs of exotics that may be in your main or kicker cooling system: Place the lower end in a container of water that has one Tbs Clorox per gallon. Crank the engine in neutral and run it at least long enough to warm up (to open any Tstats). Shut her down and you have a sanitary outboard.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Has anyone ever used pure bleach in a cooling system to descale the passages?

Never heard of using bleach but I've heard of folks using vinegar (never tried it myself though) to descale the passages. ;)
Backlash
