Re: Trolling

I have found that the most successful trolling involves giving an unpopular opinion on a highly controversial subject and posting on the most viewed area of the forum then sit back and watch the rhetoric begin :)

Be very carefull using those plugs, for short term use they are fine but over a long time use they can and will burn the tops of the piston.
They are an extremely hot plug and that is the reason they rarely foul, but any serious mechanic will tell you they will be a problem over the long haul. Just a word of caution..........

See my posts above. Been using them since about 1986 in the same motor. I'd have to check my log book, but I'd guess about 500+ hours running time.

The heat range I use is the one their book lists as equivalent to the OEM.

500 hours in 28 years? 18 hours a year? That motor doesn't even get a chance to warm up!

Yes, for sure, when I guess I'm usually wrong. At my age, CRS any more....LOL.

Anywhoot, got home and checked and the log book says 746 hours. In the good years we would get out trolling maybe 5 or 6 times a year, so nominally 30 hours use each year. In recent years, once or twice if I was lucky, due to illness of my fishing partner.

The whole point was, though, that the Splitfires haven't grenaded the old girl yet. I know for saure I would have remembered THAT!

Re: Trolling

You may have put the correct split fires in your motor. When people have fouling problems and move to a hotter plug, the split fire is one of the hottest plugs out there so they tend to go even hotter than the replacement calls for and that is where the problems normally occur. You do not run your troller motor and WOT either and that really helps. People tend to move to splitfires to try and improve performance issues and that is where the problems begin. Just intended to throw out a word of caution to those that may want to switch over to them.

Re: Trolling

When I ran charters I had motors with over 3000 hours on them without a problem. About 2400 of those hours were trolling around 2.2 MPH. Keep Ring Free or similar in the tank and run them at a high rpm to/from the fishing area, in most cases 5 - 8 miles. OOHH,, and never had a drop of ethanol in any tank then or now.

Thanks Airshot, that is the exact reason I bought the 18hp. Save on gas and a good backup! Going to do the lower unit seals then finish wiring the start/stop controls for it and will be good to go!

Going to run the Evinrude 18hp with Champion J6C and open the gap and am going to use Pennzoil Marine Synthetic Blend oil.
